Dr. Millie Gore-Lancaster
Director of Development, Promotion, and Public Relations
Millie Lancaster joined HSCB in January, 2014, was selected for New Mexico All State Band her sophomore through senior years of high school. She received the Espirit de Corps Award from her high school band her senior year. She was awarded the Outstanding Bandsman Award from the West Texas State University Band Camp her senior year; she was nominated for Outstanding Bandsman from Eastern New Mexico University Band Camp the same year (1969), but because no girl had ever been nominated for the fraternity-sponsored award, some of the band camp faculty said girls should not be eligible for the award. Several band directors walked out of the meeting in protest, and those remaining removed her name from the slate to ensure a boy was selected.
Over the years, Millie played first clarinet in the Ozark Festival Orchestra and the Midwestern State University Chamber Orchestra. A retired teacher, professor, and author of several books on education, she currently presents workshops at special education conferences on 1) the importance of music education for all students and 2) how to use music as a teaching tool in secondary schools.
